There’s something truly magical about autumn in Shropshire. The green countryside transforms into rich shades of gold, amber, red and burnt orange, the landscape becomes the perfect backdrop for beautiful photographs. From woodland walks and open countryside to golden fields and quiet country lanes, Shropshire offers endless opportunities for an autumn photoshoot.
If you’ve been thinking about booking a family, couple or maternity photoshoot this year, here are a few reasons why autumn is one of the best times of year to have your photographs taken in Shropshire.
The colours
This has to be the biggest reason to book an autumn photoshoot! Shropshire’s countryside is already gorgeous, but when the leaves begin to change, everything feels a little more magical. Woodlands become filled with warm oranges, deep reds, golden yellows and rich browns, creating a naturally beautiful backdrop for your photographs.
Locations such as Attingham Park, The Quarry and local woodland areas around Shropshire are particularly lovely during the autumn months. And the best part? You don't need any elaborate props or complicated styling, nature does most of the decorating for us.
The light
Autumn brings beautiful, soft light that works wonderfully for family photoshoots. The days get shorter, sunset arrives earlier, meaning you don't necessarily have to wait until late in the evening for that gorgeous golden-hour glow. The lower autumn sun can create beautiful warm tones through the trees, soft backlighting and gorgeous golden highlights in your photographs.
Perfect for families
One of my favourite things about autumn sessions is that we can get outside in nature, use the woodlands as our play ground. We don't need a formal studio. Instead, we can make the session all about having fun, throwing leaves, running through trees and playing hide and seek. This will keep your children engaged and showcase their personality. Think walking through crunchy leaves, cuddling up under a blanket, throwing leaves in the air, exploring the woodland, playing with the children and simply enjoying some time together. These natural interactions often create the photographs you'll treasure the most. You don't need everyone to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera, some of my favourite images are the ones where families are simply being themselves.
Cosy vibes
Think chunky jumpers, boots, scarves, hats and earthy tones all work beautifully against the autumn landscape. Colours such as rust, mustard, cream, olive, burgundy and brown complement the scenery without competing with it. If you're worried about what to wear, don't panic! I can help you choose outfits that coordinate beautifully without everyone having to wear matching clothes.
Perfect for dogs too!
If your dog is part of the family, an outdoor autumn photoshoot is a wonderful opportunity to include them. Imagine your dog running through fallen leaves, sitting amongst the trees or walking alongside you as a family. Shropshire has plenty of beautiful countryside and woodland locations we can enjoy!
You don't need to worry about the weather
Okay, let's address the obvious... this is Shropshire. It's Autumn and there is a very real possibility that it might rain! That shouldn't put you off. Overcast autumn days can create beautifully soft, flattering light, while a little drizzle can add atmosphere and make the colours around you look even richer. Sometimes the slightly misty, moody and atmospheric days produce the most beautiful images.
Shropshire gives us so much choice
One of the biggest advantages of having an autumn photoshoot in Shropshire is the variety of scenery. We can create completely different looks depending on the type of session you're after.
